This is another Meta project from Inside the Lab. It's all about applying self supervised learning so that ultimately even languages with little written material can be translated. Not only into text but also speech to speech by an 'universal speech translator'.
So, once this project leads to a well-functioning product, will we still want to learn languages? Will we do it maybe in order to 'get into' a culture? How will the status of the de facto world standard language, English, evolve? What about the position of small languages?
Will we happily teleport to new virtual environments, knowing we'll be able to communicate whatever language we speak?
In an interesting aside, it was mentioned that automated translation would also be learned to take into account emotions, like when the speaker stresses certain words.
