Strategic autonomy

This card is actually more a driver than a signal (see Drivers). It's an important force changing the world rather than an interesting but small specific thing which still has to gain traction.

The European Union realizes that it should augment its autonomy regarding defence, energy, business and technology.

This is a consequence of the war Russia started in Ukraine, but was already a trend before the violence erupted.

I guess Russia, China, the US, India and a number of other countries also want to increase their 'autonomy'.

What it means is that humanity is deeply divided. Governance structured vary from totalitarian dictatorships to more or less open democracies. Nationalism and feelings about historic grievances contribute to splitting up humanity.

At the same time the planet and humanity as a whole are being confronted with existential challenged such as climate change and the risk of a military escalation using weapons of mass destruction.
